Description

Terafab is a planned, vertically integrated semiconductor fabrication plant jointly developed by Tesla, SpaceX, and Intel. Announced by Elon Musk in March 2026, it aims to produce over one terawatt of AI compute capacity annually by consolidating chip design, fabrication, lithography, memory production, advanced packaging, and testing under one roof

A prototype facility is focused near Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, with the full-scale complex planned for Grimes County, Texas (near Gibbons Creek Reservoir). Fully built out, it could span up to about 10 million square meters (over 100 million square feet), making it one of the world’s largest factories. Chips would support Tesla’s Optimus robots, Cybercab vehicles, AI inference/training, and SpaceX’s planned space-based data centers, targeting advanced process nodes such as 2 nm.

Kind: captions Language: en In order to understand the universe, you must explore the universe. That is why we are here today. We have a profoundly important announcement. The most epic chipb building effort in history. We are announcing to Rafab, we aspire to become a galactic civilization. The most exciting future is one in which humanity is not confined to a single planet where we become multilanetary. Build cities on the moon and Mars and eventually send ships to the stars. Not science fiction. Science fact. To get there, we must harness the power of the sun. Earth receives only a tiny fraction of the sun's energy. All of civilization's electricity production is roughly a trillionth of the sun's output. The only truly scalable path is to put compute and power into space. Scale and necessity. Current global AI compute production is about 20 gawatt per year. If you add up every fab on Earth, it is still only about 2% of what we need. SpaceX and Tesla's combined demand will exceed 1 terowatt of compute. Existing suppliers, Samsung, TSMC, Micron, and others are excellent, and we will continue to buy everything they can produce. But their maximum expansion rate falls far short of what is required. We either build Tarafab or we do not have the chips. We need the chips. So we are building Terrafab. Terrafab is a vertically integrated advanced semiconductor facility that combines logic, memory, advanced packaging, testing, and lithography mask production under one roof. This closed loop capability will enable the fastest recursive design and manufacturing cycle on Earth and order of magnitude better than anything that exists today. The facility will produce two families of chips. Edge inference processors optimized for Tesla Optimus humanoid robots and cyber cabab autonomous vehicles. High power radiation hardened processors designed specifically for SpaceX. Orbital data centers operating in the harsh environment of space. Roughly 25% of output will support terrestrial applications. The majority will go to space where solar power is constant, intensity is far higher and scaling faces far fewer constraints. Today we confirm that Terraob will be built in Grimes County, Texas. The completed campus is planned to exceed 100 million square ft of manufacturing. Space the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far. The initial phase represents approximately $16.8 billion in capital investment from SpaceX and Tesla and will employ at least three Zero people, the majority from Grimes and neighboring Brazis County. Terrafab is the critical missing ingredient. With Starship delivering millions of tons to orbit each year in Turafab producing a terowatt of compute, we close the gap between today's supply and the demand of a civilization that expands to the stars. This is the next step toward becoming a galactic civilization. The foundations of that future are being laid right here in Texas. Thank you.
