- Elon Musk's Terafab project—a $25B joint venture with TeslaTSLA--, SpaceX, and xAI—aims to build the world's largest chip factory in Texas, surpassing Intel's CHIPS Act-funded facility.
The specialized machines needed for advanced chip production, such as the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography tools made exclusively by ASML, have multi-year waiting lists. Securing even a handful of these machines would require displacing orders from companies that have been planning their roadmaps for a decade. Musk’s vision for the Terafab extends far beyond powering electric vehicles.
The ambitious initiative aims to construct a vertically integrated "super-foundry" on the grounds of Giga Texas, signaling a paradigm shift in how the world's most advanced chips are designed and produced.
In March 2026, we covered Tesla and SpaceX’s “Terafab” chip factory announcement in Austin: a $20–25 billion semiconductor facility unveiled at a theatrical event, with no construction timeline provided.
Building a chip factory from scratch is arguably the hardest technical challenge in the world. Currently, Tesla relies on a mix of partners: Samsung builds AI4, while the Taiwanese giant TSMC is slated to handle the first wave of AI5.
Terafab was unveiled by Musk in March 2026 as a $25 billion mega-facility on Tesla's Giga Texas north campus. It is pitched as the "most epic chip-building effort ever," integrating logic, memory, advanced packaging, lithography, fabrication, ...
The bottom line is a tension between long-term vision and immediate execution. The Terafab announcement sets a high bar for future growth and vertical integration. Yet the simultaneous Samsung deal indicates a grounded approach to the present, securing production without waiting for a new fab to come online.
[8:32] And then xAI, although it's a new company now part of SpaceX, has also built the first gigawatt scale compute cluster, which — in record time. Jensen Huang from Nvidia said he'd never seen anything built so fast in his life before.
According to earlier reports, Tesla and SpaceX planned Terafab semiconductor factories in Austin, Texas. Musk said the sites would make chips for Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots, as well as hardware for SpaceX satellites and space data center ...
Elon Musk unveiled Terafab in Austin as a bold plan to collapse chip design, fabrication, packaging, and testing into a single, vertically integrated operation backed by Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI with a stated investment of $20 billion.
March 14 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that the company's Terafab project to make artificial intelligence chips will launch in seven days.
Intel is proud to join the Terafab project with @SpaceX, @xAI, and @Tesla to help refactor silicon fab technology. Our ability to design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale will help accelerate Terafab's aim to produce ...
U.S. chipmaker Intel said on Tuesday it would join SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla to help build Terafab, an ambitious plan to construct a series of large semiconductor fabs to produce chips for robotaxis, humanoid robots, and solar-powered data centers in space. “Our ability to design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale will help accelerate Terafab’s aim to produce 1 terawatt a year of compute to power future advances in AI and robotics,” Intel wrote in a post on X.
Intel already has facility on South MoPac Expressway in Austin. Last year, the company laid off 110 local employees as part of a plan to cut as much as 20% of its global workforce.
Morgan Stanley's semiconductor analysts described the effort as "a Herculean task" and estimated total capital expenditure at $35 to $45 billion for the pilot alone, including $20 to $25 billion for wafer fabrication equipment.
The sharp increase follows Intel's announcement of Google's commitment to use Xeon processors for years to come, which emphasizes relevance of Intel's CPUs; the TeraFab partnership, which gives a nod to Intel's capabilities in design, produce, and package high-performance processors at scale; and a host of various AI-related narratives meant to demonstrate applicability of the company's products in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence sector.Article continues belo
TeraFab, originally introduced as a joint venture between Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and SpaceX, now also includes Musk’s AI startup, xAI. According to Musk, the project aims to produce chips for Tesla’s robotaxis and Optimus robots, as well as specialized semiconductors for SpaceX’s planned network of AI-powered orbital data centers...
Another key focus of the conference will be the competitive landscape between TSMC and rivals such as Samsung and the Terafab project, jointly promoted by Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, which aims to build a semiconductor fab in Austin, Texas.
