Historically, chip design and chip manufacturing have been separate domains. Designers create architectures. Foundries manufacture them. But this separation creates friction. Design limitations arise from manufacturing constraints. Manufacturing inefficiencies slow down design innovation. Terafab aims to collapse this gap.
It is the language of a company trying to build the physical substrate for its own future, at a scale more often associated with state-backed industrial policy or a giant automaker than with a private aerospace firm. If SpaceX once looked like a launch company with some manufacturing attached, Terafab suggests the company now wants to be judged on its ability to own more of the supply chain that makes launches, satellites, and eventually compute possible.
Elon reports that AI7, “will need a different fab, since compared to AI5/AI6 it’s a more adventurous design” - one could infer this meant they were moving towards Intel as the primary manufacturer for future chips with backside power delivery and/or High-NA EUV. Random Andy Grove quotes about “only the paranoid survive”, as well as directly mentioning at the Tesla investor day that “we might even do something with Intel”, back when Terafab was first announced.
The increase is raising new concerns ... to expand. In March, Musk announced Terafab, a proposed $20-25 billion semiconductor fabrication plant near Giga Texas, also known as the Gigafactory, in eastern Travis County....
Terafab is a semiconductor fabrication facility being built near Tesla’s GigaTexas site in Austin, Texas. The plant would be vertically integrated and produce one terawatt of AI compute capacity per year. It would make chips for Tesla vehicles and robots, as well as non-terrestrial chips for space-based data centers.
Earlier this year, SpaceX solidified ... trillion. Terafab is central to this integrated strategy, expected to provide chips for Tesla's autonomous driving systems, humanoid robots, and large-scale AI data centers....
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography tools, manufactured exclusively by ASML, are fully allocated to existing customers through 2027, meaning Terafab’s incremental equipment needs cannot be met without either displacing existing buyers or waiting for ASML’s capacity expansion.
It is also the first node designed for full-scale High-NA EUV lithography deployment. High-NA EUV enables finer patterning beyond traditional EUV limits · PowerVia (Backside Power Delivery) improves power integrity and reduces IR drop · Combined, ...
Elon Musk's SpaceX, in collaboration with Tesla, unveils plans for a $55 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility in Texas aimed at enhancing domestic chip production and securing supply chains amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Given that Terafab will likely cost literally trillions of dollars and take a long time to build, the financial impact of the SpaceX-Intel partnership won't be felt for years, in all likelihood.
Third, advanced packaging technologies like Foveros 3D stacking and EMIB (Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge) that are essential for building the heterogeneous chiplets that modern AI workloads demand.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has met repeatedly over the last year with high-ranking Apple officials, including top boss Tim Cook, SpaceX chief Elon Musk and Nvidia head Jensen Huang, to try to convince them to get into business with Intel, the WSJ report said. ... Last month, Musk said Tesla will use Intel's next-generation 14A manufacturing process to make chips at its Terafab project, an advanced AI chip complex Musk has envisioned in Austin.
In parallel, Tesla has initiated ... in sub-7nm and emerging 2nm-class processes, covering the full fabrication stack from lithography to advanced packaging.3 This combination of supplier outreach and high-end hiring strongly indicates that ...
At 1.8nm to 2nm class, the node is competitive with TSMC’s N2 and Samsung’s SF2. The yield milestone signals that Intel’s process engineering has genuinely crossed into commercial readiness after years of delays. That alone is significant news. Here’s what’s getting less attention than it deserves: Intel’s advanced packaging capabilities may be the most strategically important contribution to Terafab...
For Applied Materials, being approached for Terafab is less about a single order and more about access to a potential multi company AI chip program that aims to run on cutting edge 2-nanometer process technology. Musk’s team is asking for tools across the stack, from deposition and etch to testing, which lines up with Applied’s broad equipment portfolio and its recently announced systems for Gate All Around transistors at 2nm ...
The Terafab project would involve a multi-phase chip fabrication and advanced computing complex aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor production in the United States. SpaceX estimates total investment could rise to US$119 billion if additional ...
The increase is raising new concerns ... to expand. In March, Musk announced Terafab, a proposed $20-25 billion semiconductor fabrication plant near Giga Texas, also known as the Gigafactory, in eastern Travis County....
The TERAFAB initiative outlines an ambitious future where massive amounts of compute are shifted directly into orbit. These space-based datacenters, deployed alongside the ever-expanding Starlink satellite constellation, possess an absolute ...
Intel has established a manufacturing partnership with Elon Musk’s corporate portfolio, including Tesla, SpaceX, and AI firm xAI. The project, named Terafab, aims to build a semiconductor fabrication plant in Austin, Texas.
The US chipmaker said on Tuesday ... Terafab, an ambitious plan to construct a series of enormous semiconductor fabs to produce chips for robotaxis, humanoid robots, and solar-powered data centers in Space....
