I saw X-Light present on April 16 at the TechInsights Critical Materials Conference in Portland. Their concept is really only interesting if one were building a clean sheet, large scale fab with many EUV tools. There is only one project like that that I know of; TeraFab.
It is worth noting that the internal consumption capacity of Elon Musk's business empire provides a solid demand floor for Terafab. While strong internal demand reduces commercialization risk, the project still faces immense execution challenges: EUV lithography machines remain supply-constrained and are difficult to procure; achieving acceptable yields on leading-edge nodes requires a long technology accumulation; and the total capital expenditure over the long term could soar into the hun

LCRX) both delivered record or near-record results, with demand for imaging systems and wafer-fab equipment hitting cycle highs. ... INTC) — the sector’s long-standing cautionary tale — posted its sixth consecutive earnings beat, with foundry yields running ahead of schedule and a landmark customer commitment from Elon Musk’s Terafab project finally giving its manufacturing ambitions a
Elon Musk said Tesla, xAI and SpaceX will begin a new project he described as a “Terafab” in Austin, a move tied to the companies’ efforts to develop artificial intelligence chips.
The fab project, called Terafab, is a joint effort between Tesla and SpaceX. Musk’s goal is to build a large semiconductor fab in Austin, Texas--at a cost of $20 billion to $25 billion.
The company typically values vertical integration and prefers to do all of its development in-house, even going so far as to launch its own AI chip manufacturing plans via the TERAFAB project. To date, Tesla has acquired only roughly 10 companies in its entire history, usually focusing on battery tech or manufacturing automation. This mystery company must possess unique intellectual property that Tesla and its current partners cannot provide. This is particularly notable given that Tesla already
TSLA's valuation at ~226x NTM EV/EBIT is driven largely by optionality on high-uncertainty projects like Terafab, FSD, and Robotaxi, not core operations. TSLA aims to meet future AI chip demand by vertically integrating chip production, starting with a $3B research fab and scaling via a $25B facility with SpaceX and xAI. TSMC acknowledges TSLA as a customer and competitor but expresses confidence in its own technology leadership and notes the lengthy, complex ramp required for new fabs.

Regarding Terafab (Tesla’s chip fab), the company plans to start building a Research Fab at Giga Texas this year. The $3B project will produce several thousand wafers per month.
On March 21, 2026, SpaceX announced the project to build Terafab, a joint project with Tesla and xAI, to build a large semiconductor fabrication project centering on the construction of a vertically integrated “mega-fab” designed to produce ...
It's not very surprising: Tesla has announced massive AI spending projects, including Terafab, a joint venture with SpaceX and xAI aimed at building more semiconductor chips.
